More than 200 young players are learning from former NHLers this August and for the 7th straight year, OPA! is proud to be back on the ice with them.
This summer, the Calgary Flames Alumni Hockey School is back with OPA! Of Greece as presenting sponsor. Over 200 kids, aged 7-12 are at Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on Tsuut’ina Nation, spending a week on the ice with Flames Alumni. The camp runs in two sessions: August 4–8 and August 17–21, with age-grouped ice times each morning.
More than a hockey camp
Over six hours of on-ice instruction covers the fundamentals that stick with a player for life, including power skating, edgework, pivoting, puck handling, and shooting. Every participant receives a custom camp jersey, and every session wraps with a one-on-one autograph session with former Calgary Flames greats.
But talk to the Alumni running it and the skills work isn’t really the point. Former Flames centre and school co-chair Matt Stajan told CTV News he wants kids walking away from the week with “a good experience with guys who have been around the game a long time”.
The school also plays a role in a conversation a lot of Calgary families are having right now: the cost of getting kids into hockey. Sponsorship from businesses like OPA! Of Greece helps keep programs like this one within reach, and proceeds from the school support local charities through the Calgary Flames Alumni Association.
